Bathroom Remodeling Success Part II – Planning and Design
Successful bathroom remodeling first begins with an Idea as we covered this in Part I of the series. Once you have established your dream it is time to condense all of the aspirations, hopes and desires into a doable and buildable plan.
Part II of the five-part series addresses proper planning and design. While every stage is significant to overall success this particular stage may not be able to guarantee success it can most certainly insure failure. An accurate cost estimate and successful construction hinge upon proper planning and design. Be leery of any contractor that tries to give you a price based on ‘fixture count’ or ‘similar jobs’ as in the end you will find the cost you agreed to pay was far less than what you actually shelled out by the end.
A renovation or remodel is no different from anything else you have ever purchased regardless of what some may try to lead you to believe. You need to know and see what it is you are agreeing to buy when dealing with construction just as you do when buying a car or even a winter coat. Think about it, would you have bought your car if someone scribbled an outline on a piece of paper? Would you have paid someone to go and take a picture of the car and bring it back only to have to pay again when you wanted to see a different color. Of course you would not have. Who would?
No where in your day-to-day life do you pay money for someone to show you what they want to sell you. You also do not pay money without seeing what you are buying. Keep both of these items in mind when selecting your contractor.

Below you will find a few layout examples just to give you a few ideas.
Now lets hit a few high spots that you need to know about basic bathroom design.
A bathrooms design is as personal as ones style and look. While the basics of toilet, sink, and tub/shower are found in all bathrooms it is their arrangement, color, texture, style and surrounds that make the whole a reflection of the owner.
Getting caught up in paint color selection, tiling material, lighting and new fixture styles is not unusual at all during the remodel process. These are all items that are fun to pick out and fun to buy. They are what give your project ‘splash’, however the layout is as important if not more than most of these items.
Arrangement of fixtures can vary within the same rectangle many different ways. You could have sink by toilet and tub across or tub next to sink and toilet in the corner and on and on. The decision is strictly up to the owner.
What you need to think about is what are your pet peeves and what do you like. For instance, a lot of people like to read when in the restroom so, it would be better if your toilet were set adjacent to a wall or cabinet to allow for a nice magazine or book rack. What about lighting? If you read you don’t want it to be dark. I realize using the restroom is personal thing and you don’t have share what you do but there are many design choices that have to do with habits. In another example I like for my toilet to have its own room within the bathroom. I don’t know why but that’s what I like. When designing my bathroom the separate room feature is what we refer to as a ‘design around’ or ‘must have’.
‘Design around’ and ‘must have’ are terms we use to describe features the homeowner will not do without and must be incorporated into the new bathroom.
You may not want your sink near toilet or you would like your toilet out of sight while you are lounging in your new soaking tub. Another factor could be you love your spouse but don’t like standing next to them at the sink while getting ready for the day which is easily solved by separating the area within the same room.
All of these are items to think about and there are obviously many more. We all have our personal preferences and when designing any remodel you need to be sure you take the time to write down yours so none are overlooked during the design process.
Color and its coordination are the first two items the eye will notice when entering the room. The flooring will eventually catch the eye as will the fixtures and cabinets but it will be the walls that the eyes are trained to upon entering.
Some will tell you that you can pick your paint color later or let them know your selection at a later date. They will tell you it’s not important right now because this is one of the last task to be performed during your bathroom remodel. NuGreen Contracting DOES NOT recommend this and does not recommend you follow this advise.
By following this advise you are immediately agreeing to allow your floor color, cabinets and fixtures to dictate your wall color. While this may seem ok it’s not a good idea.
During the design phase ALL items that will be a part of your remodel need to be decided upon. Even if you are paying separately for the items or doing it yourself, all products and colors need to be specified during the design process if the finished product is to live up to your dreams.
Items to be selected during the bathroom remodeling design process:
6. flooring material
7. wall material (tile, paper or none)
8. trim (crown moulding, door casings, window casings, baseboard)
10. knobs and handles
11. counter top
13. window treatments
14. paint color
16. towel bars and toilet paper holder
17. soap or shampoo holder for shower and bath
18. cut of tile and laying pattern
This list a good one to keep with you when clipping your pictures or saving them on your hard-drive. I realize this all may be overwhelming for a ‘planning’ stage BUT if you take the time now and go through each and every item you will save time on the back-end and most importantly you will assure yourself of a great project without surprises.
